Dargle Days: Horses, Hills & a Hint of Country Magic

There’s something about the Dargle that feels like stepping into the pages of a storybook. White picket fences frame rolling green hills, horses graze lazily in the distance, and the air carries that unmistakable country freshness.
It’s a place where the pace slows, smiles linger, and friendly hellos from strangers make you feel instantly at home. My boy comes alive here, chasing the sunshine, running across open fields, and laughing at the sight of tractors and farm equipment at Piggly Wiggly. For him, the highlight is always the trains. Yes, actual trains still come and go here, and his eyes light up every time he hears that whistle.

For me, it’s the old-world charm, the Howick Falls thundering nearby, the warmth of the locals, and the way the hills seem to hug you in.
On our latest trip, inCase came in handy when Alojze got himself well and truly stuck into a dripping ice cream cone. Out came the trusty wet wipes, proof that in the country, just like in the bush, being prepared makes every adventure smoother.
Dargle is only a short drive from Johannesburg, but it feels a world away. Horses, hills, and a whole lot of heart, that’s why we keep coming back.
